Tell me about Lucene/SOLR

I tend to find myself in forums talking about predictive statistics more than NLP, so I basically never see anyone talking about Lucene. All of a sudden at work everyone's talking about it like applying it to our problem will be a magic pill (which it may well be). Anyone here have any experience? What do you guys think of this tool
