Getting Started Question (Language)

I am just breaking ground on learning machine learning (Stanford course on youtube). My background is in applied math and I am familiar with Maple, SAS, and SQL. I just installed R and am willing to buy Matlab to get into ML. My question is, given my relative virgin status which language should I use? My interest at the moment is in data analysis and statistics, ideally using ML to speed up the process.
