Self study machine learning?

I haven't done any serious math in quite a long time and I wanted to know what resources would you recommend to raise my rusty math skills to the appropriate level for machine learning and genetic programming?

I hope to re-learn mathematics the proper way instead of memorizing steps to solve a problem.
