How easy/difficult is it for a programmer with machine learning experience or a statistician with programming experience to get a job in the other's field [X-post AskStatistics]

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I was a statistics major as an undergrad with a minor in computer science. I'm in graduate school now getting a master's degree in Software Engineering. I want to focus on areas that have to deal with Machine Learning and Data Analysis.

I have experience as a software developer were we had to use some machine learning techniques (pca mostly) but I've never had a job as a statistician. If I wanted to transition later in my career and do more statistics instead of machine learning/software development how difficult would this be?
