Self Adaptive Mutation Rate For Genetic Algorithms

I am in the process of designing a GA for a data mining problem I have been given as coursework. I've been reading that implementing self adaption using Gaussian distribution as opposed to a static mutation rate can significantly improve results. Although I don't seem to understand much of the literature on the subject.. could someone please ELI5?
