Best Classifier for split classes

Hi all, I'm wondering which classifiers are well suited for classifying instances where a particular class can be split into more than one discrete cluster. For example in this state of the art render, where X class is scattered into several separate clusters. I was thinking kNN with some sort of density estimation, but I figured i'd ask the pros before I dove in.
