problems with SVM's over 4 classes

I have a data set with 6 classes. Any subset of 4 classes can be predicted with SVM's, and any pairwise comparison of classes is easily resolved. Yet when I try to use SVM's to discern between 5+ classes, the accuracy goes over the falls. Is this a common SVM problem?
