Removing seasonality from time series data

is there a general way of removing seasonality from time series data? Many of the methods I have read about seem fairly ad-hoc, I was wondering if there is a 'best practice' recommended way of doing it? especially if there are multiple levels i.e. daily,weekly and monthly seasonality in the same series.
