Is there a good free paper available which compares the performance of classifiers given a relatively small sample size (give the FV dimensionality)?

I gather large margin classifiers are the way to go which would suggest SVM or perhaps some tree boosting methods which, as I understand it, are also large margin. I thought I saw a helpful paper but it's not free....damn it.
