Is it possible/worthwhile to implement batch learning for Kohonen networks?

The learning algorithm I'm familiar with adjust the network in response to a single training example at a time. I can think of a couple ways off the top of my head to implement batch learning, but I was wondering if there is literature showing that one method performs better than others, or that batch learning is sort of pointless for SOFMs.
