I've been looking around for a move to Silicon Valley recently, and I've found that the majority of ML jobs involve stuff like recommender systems, website click data, ad revenue maximization, A/B testing, business intelligence, etc. Apparently, this is where the money is to be made nowadays, but the 'big data for profit maximization' fad will subside eventually, once most of the data has been mined.
I'm currently working in the financial world, and one of the reasons for wanting to change careers (instead of doing, for example, high frequency trading) is to make a substantial positive impact in the world. For this reason, I'm disappointed by the content of the job openings I find. There must be a whole lot more that can be done with all the exciting developments in ML!
What are some companies/jobs/projects/research groups/general ideas where the ability to model/analyze data using the state of the art in ML could make the world a better place? Bonus points if there actually is some money to be made there, too. ^__^
