[Please Don't Bite] I would like to know where to learn the basics

Hi,

I'm a programmer for some time now, working in web and video games. I have been fascinated by the things we can do with machine learning for a while and would like to know "how to get my feet in".

Is there any resources for noobs or whatever you could share ?
