Taking beginner's course in machine learning focusing on NLP, and not very happy with the literature so far. What's your recommendation for beginner's book in ML?

The course book we're using is 'Introduction to Machine Learning' by Ethem Alpayden, and feel like I have a difficulty of understanding his explanations within certain areas. I would like to have some extra literature for guidance when I feel like I'm stuck. Any recommendations?
